Recently in Pakistan, there has been a troubling increase in terrorist attacks. Specifically, on May 28, eight people were reported killed in a restaurant by a suicide bomber. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for this attack, and according to local officials, the intended target was Malik Tehsil Khan, an anti-Taliban militant.
This is just one in a series of recent terrorist attacks that have occurred throughout the country following the demise of Osama bin Laden. Just three days earlier, in Peshaver, a car bomber killed seven people at a local police station.
Unfortunately, the Pakistani government's reaction to a rise in extremism has been to focus the issue on its sovereignty, ignoring issues that encourage violence against minorities such as the anti-blasphemy laws. These laws legalize the persecution of all religious minorities in Pakistan.
America should urge Pakistan to change such policies. Only through social equality can the United States hope for permanent piece and security in Pakistan.
