Dubai’s Burj Khalifa Residents Told to End Ramadan Fast Later
Residents of Dubai's Burj Khalifa – the world's tallest tower – have been advised to break their daily fast for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan later than everyone else.
The city's top clerics say residents living between the 80th and 150th floors in the 828-meter building should wait an additional two minutes to break their dawn-to-dusk fast. Those living on the 150th floor or above were told to wait an extra three minutes.
Religious authorities say Muslims must ensure they can no longer see the sun before breaking their fast. Because of the height of the building, some Burj Khalifa dwellers will still be able to see the sun after it has set at ground level.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The start of the holiday is determined by the appearance of the new moon.
During Ramadan, Muslims are expected to fast and abstain from smoking and sex from dawn to sunset. The month ends with a celebration called Eid al-Fitr.
