Faith and honesty: Oslo tragedy

...[W]hat’s bothersome is that his religious leanings are downplayed. Had a Muslim been convicted, he would have instantaneously been deemed a Muslim terrorist and Islam bashing would have ensued.

On July 22 Norway suffered its gravest atrocity since World War II. The alleged perpetrator of this heinous act, Anders Behring Breivik, happens to be a self-described Christian conservative who had carefully orchestrated and documented his plan for many years. His manifesto clearly outlined his delusional ambitions. Sadly, it took awhile for most media outlets to identify him as such.

Despite glaring evidence, he continues to be termed a madman and his attorney plans his defense on grounds of insanity. Indeed, he was insane to commit the massacre. However, what’s bothersome is that his religious leanings are downplayed. Had a Muslim been convicted, he would have instantaneously been deemed a Muslim terrorist and Islam bashing would have ensued.

The Oslo tragedy shatters the myth that all Muslims may not be terrorists but all terrorists are Muslim. It’s time to stop conflating terrorism with a particular faith. No faith condones violence.
