Potsin (C/R), Aug. 08, GNA- The Central Regional Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association, on Sunday climaxed its 33rd Regional Annual Conference at Gomoa Postin, near Winneba with a call on parents to make the education of their children paramount.

The three-day Conference which was under the theme, “Superstitious belief: Islamic point of view”, was attended by over 1,300 women from the various districts of the Central Region.

Speaking on the “challenges faced by the youth in education”, Miss Zainab Nkrumah, the Central Regional Youth Leader of the Association, said that poverty and irresponsible parenthood accounts for the large number of uneducated youths in the Region.

Broken homes, peer pressure as well as lack of supervision and monitoring by parents were other factors militating against the education of the youth, she added.

Miss. Nkrumah enumerated a number of effects bad parenting had on children including children having to fend for themselves by engaging in menial jobs and subsequently falling into bad company and dropping out of school.

She said when this happens, the children concentrate on the little money being earned and no more pay attention to going to school, whiles some indulge in vices such as prostitution which eventually brings about unwanted pregnancies and HIV/AIDS.

Miss. Nkrumah asked parents to be responsible and avoid unnecessary spending in order to ensure that their children were well clothed, sheltered and educated for them to grow into responsible adults.

She advised children to be equally responsible by being obedient, studious and hardworking.

The District Chief Executive of Gomoa East, Mr. Kingsley Ahunu Armah, advised parents not to force their children to pursue courses they have no interest in.

People should also not allow religion, ethnocentrism or politics bring disunity among them and called for peace and unity among Ghanaians.

The president of the Central Regional Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association, Mrs. Fatima Ewudzie Saeed also expressed worry about the attitude of some parents who see education as expensive and urged them to consider it an investment that would yield the desired dividends at the appropriate time.
