An Indonesian court Monday sentenced a minority sect member to six months in prison for defending himself and others from a mob that killed three of his friends.

Deden Sudjana, whose hand was nearly severed by a machete, was found guilty of disobeying police orders to leave the scene and attacking one of the assailants. His sentence equaled the stiffest penalty given to any of 12 Islamic extremists who led the February rampage.

Video shown at the trial showed a mob of about 1,500 Sunni Muslims attacking a group of 20 Ahmadiyah sect members, beating them and caving in the head of one person with a rock.


The Ahmadiyah sect, which is believed to have 200,000 followers across the country, considers itself Muslim. But mainstream Muslims in Indonesia and some other countries do not accept them because they do not believe the Prophet Muhammad was the final prophet.

In 2008, the Indonesian government officially banned the group from spreading its faith.
