Din Syamsuddin, the chairman of Indonesia’s second largest Muslim organization, Muhammadiyah, says he is disappointed with the weak legal sanctions imposed on those responsible for rioting and murder in a religious conflict in Cikeusik, Banten, in February.
“The punishment is too soft. That hurts me,” Din said at Muhammadiyah headquarters in Menteng, Central Jakarta.
He added that the government should have given harsher punishments and longer periods of time to be spent in jail. “I respect the legal process, but my sense of justice felt insulted when those found guilty of violence were only sentenced to several months in prison.”
He also said that people should not always blame Islamic parties and organizations for religious-based violence.
Three members of the Ahmadiyah sect were murdered and dozens of others severely injured when they were attacked by a mob in Cikeusik, Banten, West Java, on Feb. 6.
The Serang District Court gave a slap on the wrist on Thursday to 12 people involved in the attack.
The Court sentenced the 12 defendants to between three and six months in jail for “inciting hatred” against the minority Ahmadis.
The 10 defendants, including cleric Ujang Muhammad Arif, who allegedly incited the attack on the Ahmadis, were sentenced to six months in jail. One defendant, Idris bin Mahdani, was sentenced to five months and 15 days in prison, while juvenile defendant Dani bin Misra was sentenced to three months in prison.(aaa)
