For those who keep their feet on the ground and survive Doomsday, "I'm sure we'll have a little fete to celebrate, I suppose it's up to each of us to find our own way."

They await alien rescue beam in France

(Newser) – What to do when Doomsday approaches? Head for a modern-day Noah's Ark, obviously. New Agers are beginning to stream to the hilltop community of Bugarach in France to await a tele-transportation beam from an alien craft to save them from the apocalypse they believe has been predicted by the Mayans (or not) for December. The Pic de Bugarach, the highest peak in the Cobière mountain range, has long been thought to hold a mystical power. Hence, the wacky gatherings—including nudists, who aren't very popular with the regular 200 residents, notes the Independent.

Officials fear that up to 100,000 believers may descend on the tiny town before the big day. The mayor has alerted French authorities to be on the lookout for plans for mass suicides.

"Already this year more than 20,000 people have climbed right to the top," said Mayor Jean-Pierre Delord. "They think Pic de Bugarach is an alien garage."

For those who keep their feet on the ground and survive Doomsday, "I'm sure we'll have a little fete to celebrate," the mayor quips. "I suppose it's up to each of us to find our own way."
