Indonesia: Religious Intolerance on the Rise, Says University Gadjah Mada

TEMPO Interactive, SLEMAN:The University Gadjah Mada University’s Center for Religious and Cross Culture Studies (CRCS) has published a report on religious life in Indonesia in 2011, which concluded that religious intolerance is on the rise.

Weakening support from the central and provincial governments has resulted in growing religious intolerance, the report said. “We think this is already at a red level,” said Suhadi Cholil, a lecturer at CRCS UGM yesterday.

“The Ahmadiyah and Yasmin Church case prove there is a tendency in the provinces to ignore violations against freedom of faith,” said Suhadi. The 84-page report also mentioned seven religious defamation allegations filed against the Millah community in Aceh and the Shiah community in Sampang, Madura.

Dian Nafi, Al-Muayyad Islamic Boarding School head in Solo, called on the CRCS to monitor cross-culture tension, which he says has been the root of religious violence. “Research on cultural tension is useful to formulate strategies to promote peace in order to deter faith fueled violence,” he said.
