West Midlands Lib Dem MEP Phillip Bennion joined Halesowen's local Conservative MP to show strong support for the opening of a new Ahmadiyya Mosque in a former Methodist church in the town.
The Long Lane church had lain empty since the Methodist community relocated to the Crossway Centre in 2009, but the 102-year-old building has now been restored and converted into a mosque for the local Ahmadiyya Muslim community. The Ahmadiyya branch of Islam was established in 19th Century India and preaches the doctrine of 'Love for All - Hatred for None' and is committed to non-violence.
Phil Bennion MEP and Tory MP James Morris joined worshippers, trustees and local civic leaders to welcome the world leader of the Ahmadiyya Islamic Community, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, to inaugurate the new mosque on Sunday March 18th.
Phil said: "I was delighted to show my support for this excellent initiative and to join local council and political leaders from across the spectrum in welcoming this place of worship for the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.
"The restoration work has been carried out to a very high standard and contains meeting room facilities for wider local community use. I was impressed by their determination to serve the whole local community.
"The attacks suffered by this peace-loving community from right wing extremist thugs in recent years are appalling and wrong. I was pleased to stand shoulder to shoulder with James Morris and other political and civic leaders in Halesowen to show that we utterly reject bigotry and intolerance."
