UK: Hundreds gather for Peace Symposium 2012

Ours are not empty words. We aspire and live by what we say wherever in the world we be. As some of the guests speakers noted last night, in spite of being bitterly persecuted in places like Pakistan, we have nothing but love, compassion and practical help to offer.

My Ahmadiyya Muslim community has been holding an annual peace symposium in London for the past several years now. Our worldwide spiritual leader, our Khalifatul Masih, makes a keynote speech at the occasion. The event is one of the many endeavours by us to promote societal peace and harmony. It is always well attended by the great and the good of London and beyond.

This year’s symposium was last night and I understand we had around 800 guests. Local politicians always kindly attend but last night we had the presence of none other than the mayor himself. Yes, Boris was there. He was very kind and generous in his speech about our community but more than that he spoke effusively about London being the city of peace. Cynics may say what they want but I found his words to be based on reality when put in context of the world we live in today.

Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih’s speech last night was based on the very real threats of war the world faces today. He outlined the horrors of nuclear destruction and spoke of finding solutions to world problems other than war. He said he has written a letter to the Pope urging him to use his influence towards world peace. He said he has also written letters to Benjamin Netanyahu, Ahmadinejad and recently Barack Obama regarding the same.  He also spoke about the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and said that the founder of our Muslim community had written to Queen Victoria in 1897 on her Diamond Jubilee, thanking her for her just and fair rule of India and praying for her. Last night Khalifatul Masih paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in words written 105 years ago for Queen Victoria, noble and honourable Empress.

Ours are not empty words. We aspire and live by what we say wherever in the world we be. As some of the guests speakers noted last night, in spite of being bitterly persecuted in places like Pakistan, we have nothing but love, compassion and practical help to offer.

Apparently Boris promoted the new London Bus last night presenting a model as a gift. What’s more he has been roped into cycling for one of our charity rides for the Jubilee commemoration later in the year!
