Humanity First USA will hold the inaugural “Night for Sight” fundraising dinner and silent auction on Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 7pm to 10pm, the organization has announced.

The event is being organised to raise funds for the Humanity First USA banner program, Gift of Sight, and it will be held at Pipers Banquets in Aurora, Illinois.

The Gift of Sight program seeks to cure blindness by sending eye care teams abroad, the organization said.

The visiting teams will help those in need by setting up eye camps for adults and children, teaching local health care professionals new techniques to treat eye diseases, and donating medications, eyeglasses and equipment, the Humanity First website says.

Medical and student volunteers have traveled to Guatemala for the past two years to perform cataract surgeries and full eye exams for free.

Humanity First Guatemala Executive Director, David Gonzalez, will be speaking at the dinner to share his experiences from the Gift of Sight annual clinics.

Director Gonzalez, who has lead Humanity First Guatemala since its inception in January 2010, has coordinated logistics for both Gift of Sight missions, including arranging triage and post-operation clinics for patients. Under his guidance, the Humanity First Water for Life initiative has built over 100 water wells to serve over a thousand individuals in Masagua, and a state-of-the-art Humanity First computer training center has been established in Antigua.

Guest speaker Dr. Eileen Gable will be sharing her expertise on international medical missions. She is an optometrist and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, and has traveled to Guatemala on several occasions for medical missions. Dr. Gable, along with several other Loyola doctors, will be joining the Gift of Sight team in late 2012 for their annual eye clinic in Guatemala.

The program will also include a screening of the Gift of Sight 2011 documentary and remarks from Gift of Sight Program Director Dr. Ahsan Khan and Humanity First USA Executive Director, MunumNaeem.
