In Tamil Nadu state in South India, a regional convention of Majlis Ansārullāh, an auxiliary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, was stopped forcefully by a mob of Islamist militants, it is reported by local sources.

Tirupur, a textile city located in the western parts of the state, has a small but active community of about 60 Ahmadi Muslim members and the community has carried on their religious activities since some time in the city.

On Saturday, April 7, a mob of about 250 militants surrounded a meeting hall when a convection of Majlis Ansarullah of North Zone Tamil Nadu was underway at a rented location and more than 70 elder members of the community from various parts of North Tamil Nadu were assembled in the hall.

The event was being held in an area of the city where a significant Muslim population resides.

The Muslim protesters shouted slogans against the Ahmadi community telling the spectators gathered there that Ahmadis should be considered out of the fold of Islām.

According to the reports gathered via telephone, around midday a handful of miscreants from the Tamil Nadu Tauheed Jamaat (TNTJ) a Muslim faction within Sunni group, demanded entry into the convention hall which was refused by the Ahmadiyya community citing the event was a member’s convention.

As a result, further according to the reports, the troublemaker were infuriated and threatened consequences; and later returned with a mob of about 250 thugs and surrounded the meeting hall shouting slogans against the community.

The community informed the police authorities who appeared at the scene and protected the community members from the mob.

The mob insisted that the community remove all signs from the hall which depicted Islamic messages including the banners showing Kalima Shahada, the Muslim creed.

A few protestors from the mob forcefully tore down Kalima Shahada and some other banners, it was confirmed.

The situation was brought under control by the police who escorted Ahmadi members to safety and helped convention participants take transportation to Coimbatore, at about 50 km distance from Tirupur,

According to the community, the Majlis Ansārullāh convention will continue at Coimbatore.

The Police Commissioner of Tirupur gave complete support to the community and the area Collector assured that an inquiry would be conducted and action would be taken against the miscreants, it was reported.

This incident comes at the heels of an attack few weeks ago on the Ahmadiyya Bait-ul-Hamd Mosque at Hyderabad which is about 700 kilometers north of here.

The anti-Ahmadiyya militancy by Islamist is growing in secular India, it has been observed, and the extremists are starting physical mob style attacks at quiet and peaceful functions organized internally by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
