Ali Al-Hashimi, the Religious adviser to the President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has urged for more efforts to attain more knowledge and called for respecting all faiths and all prophets and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in particular.
Al Hashimi, in a lecture at the Sultan Bin Zayed’s Culture And Media Centre, also slammed claims that Islam was spread by the power of the sword.
“Wise people from all faiths truly admit that Islam triumphed and spread, not by the power of sword, but by persuasion, true conviction and spiritual contentment. Islam does not recognize any talk or action produced under coercion and those who claim otherwise are spreading lies to ignorant people about Islam,” he said.
He stressed that Islam urges people to read and learn on every occasion. The verses of the Qur’an command, advise, warn, and encourage people to observe the phenomena of nature, the succession of day and night, the movements of stars, the sun, moon, and other heavenly bodies.
Muslims are urged to look into everything in the universe, travel, investigate, explore and understand them, the better to appreciate and be thankful for all the wonders and beauty of God’s creations, according to the scholar.
Education is not restricted to religious issues; it includes all fields of knowledge, including biology, engineering, medicine, physics, linguistics and technology. However studying Islam holds a tremendously higher value as Muslim scholars have the highest status in Islam, second only to that accorded to prophets, according to Al-Hashimi.
He cited a hadith (tradition) by Prophet Mohammad which reads: “The example of guidance and knowledge with which Allah has sent me is like abundant rain falling on the earth, some of which was fertile soil that absorbed rain water and brought forth vegetation and grass in abundance.
“The other portion of it was barren which could neither hold the water nor bring forth vegetation (then that land gave no benefits). The first is the example of the person who comprehends Allah’s religion and gets benefit (from the knowledge) which Allah has revealed through me (the Prophets and learns and then teaches others. The last example is that of a person who does not care for it and does not take God’s guidance revealed through me (He is like that barren land),” the hadith says.
