WASHINGTON - Tuesday marks the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and to honor victims, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community is holding its second annual national "Muslims for Life" blood drive.

The goal, by the oldest Muslim organization in the United States, is to not only save lives, but to show that Islam values the sanctity of life.

Naseem Mahdi, Ahmadiyyaa Muslim Community's National Vice President says, "On 9/11, 2001, the impression was created that Muslims are for destruction of life, and we want to change that impression."

At the heart of the Rayburn House building on Capitol Hill, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community's blood drive collected blood from people from all walks of life and all different faiths.

The nationwide campaign aims to collect a total of 11,000 bags of blood from Muslims and non Muslims alike.

The blood can help save as many as 33,000 American lives. The effort is being made possible with the help of the American Red Cross, and support from members of Congress.

Wayne Basluck donated blood and says it's the right thing to do.

He says, "I think it's important to remember and move forward so by donating blood it helps others."

Many say the September 11 attacks hijacked Islam and put American Muslims on the defensive about their religion.

The Ahmadiyya sect of Islam began in India and espouses a less orthodox interpretation of jihad and sharia law.

Their members hope that the blood drive reverses the damage and helps show that despite our differences, we all shed the same blood.

Mahdi says, "We are all united because we all care about humanity."

A second blood drive will take place on Thursday, September 13, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Cannon Caucus Room, Independence Avenue SE & 1st, SE, Washington, D.C.
