THE people of Fiji should be free to adopt any system of government that suits them.
In their submissions to the Constitution Commission over the weekend, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at Fiji said the people's choice for government, whether it be a democracy, sovereignty or tribal, was up to them.
The religious group said in the view of Islam, it preferred democracy but mutual consultation was preferred. It said Fiji should have a democratic system but not exactly based on the western model.
"The two principles of our community's concept of democracy are trust and integrity, and absolute justice," said Moshin Illhi Khan, a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at Fiji in their submission.
The group also recommended decisions in matters of the government should be on mutual consultation, there should be no compulsion in the matter of faith and no clash between loyalty to one's state and religion.
They also submitted that treaties and agreements must always remain honoured and if differences arise, they should be settled in the light of principles enunciated in the Quran, without selfish motives.
