A Youth Organisation representing young Muslims from across Wales has boosted efforts to improve the country’s environment by helping to plant well in excess of 600 new trees.

Twenty-five members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association recently joined forces with other volunteers from the local community to plant trees in the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Carmarthenshire.

The synchronised creation of woodland also took place on the slopes of Mount Kenya giving the initiative a truly global outlook.

The project formed part of the AMYA’s national environmental tree planting initiative that it is running in conjunction with the Woodland Trust.

Discussing the scope of the initiative, Simon Goodenough, Curator of the National Botanic Garden, stated that the trees included:
“A rich mosaic of native species… including birch, poplar, alder, willow and oak. A celebratory oak, raised from an acorn from Sandringham, will be a special commemoration of the Queen’s Jubilee.”

Dr Nassir Domun, Spokesperson for AMYA Wales stated:
“Our members are delighted to have been able to do their bit to improve the local environment which is an important part of our faith as Muslims.
“Events such as these also help to promote good community relations and our members are keen to get involved in similar schemes in the future.”
