LAHORE: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) condemned the destruction of over 100 tombstones at an Ahmadi graveyard on Monday and demanded the arrests of those responsible.

HRCP Chairperson Zohra Yusuf stated, “This is an unmistakable act of intimidation and escalation in the campaign of hate and violence against the Ahmadi community.”

Eyewitnesses reported that 12 to 15 masked men, carrying weapons and excavation tools, entered the graveyard in the Model Town area of Lahore early Monday morning. The perpetrators removed and broke the tombstones of graves.

Yusuf added that, “The attackers’ success in overpowering several persons at the graveyard and completing the destruction in half an hour shows that the incident was well-planned.”

The HRCP appealed to the government to take swift action against the persecution of Ahmadis.

“The message that the attackers wanted to convey was simple: that they could act with impunity and without fear of any repercussions if Ahmadis were at the receiving end. If the authorities want to send a different message, the time to act is now.”
