LONDON: Tajul Muluk, a religious leader from the East Java Shia community, has had two years added to his two-year sentence for blasphemy and deviant teachings following his Supreme Court appeal. IHRC urges its supporters to write to the UN and the Indonesian Minister of Justice and Human Rights demanding that they take the necessary measures to ensure his immediate release so that he may continue his peaceful work in defense of human rights.
In September 2012, he appealed the sentence before the East Java High Court, and had his sentence increased to four years. Muluk has strenuously denied the allegations made against him, and his lawyers claim that no evidence to support these charges were ever offered before any court that has tried him.
In related sectarian violence, an estimated 275 people, including 60 children are still living in temporary shelter in the Sampang sports complex where their access to food and water is extremely limited, having been forced to flee their homes after sectarian violence. In other developments a Sufi leader was also recently attacked. More information can be found http://ihrc.org.uk/activities/press-releases/10402-press-release-ihrc-extremely-concerned-at-recent-sectarian-events-in-indonesia .
IHRC requests campaigners and supporters to write letters and emails to the UN and the Indonesian Minister of Justice and Human Rights, demanding that they do all they can to guarantee the immediate release of Tajul Muluk and the safe return of the Shia community to their homes.
