Indonesia: Poll backs anti-minorties candidate for West Java Governor's re-election

In Bogor and Bekasi, the respective local governments have refused to honor court orders instructing them to each reopen a local church. In other parts of West Java, the government has urged members of the Ahmadiyah Muslim minority to leave their faith.

West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan will secure a second term in this month’s gubernatorial election, a survey group predicted on Sunday.

The Strategic Development Study Center (Puskaptis) predicted that Ahmad, the candidate backed by the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), would garner 31 percent of the vote in the Feb. 24 poll.

In second place is Dede Yusuf, backed by the Democratic Party with 27 percent, followed by Rieke Diah Pitaloka of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) with 19 percent. Dede is Ahmad’s current deputy governor.

If the polling numbers are replicated in the election, Ahmad will pass the 30 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff ballot.

The latest result indicates that Ahmad is gaining popularity. Last month, the same survey group put Ahmad’s vote at 25 percent, followed by Dede with 24 percent.

“If the trend remains unchanged until election day, then it is almost certain that the West Java gubernatorial election will not go into a runoff vote.,” said Puskaptis executive director Husin Yazid.

The recent Puskaptis study surveyed 1,250 respondents across West Java from Feb. 2-7.

Rights activists say that since Ahmad took office in 2008, ethnic relations in West Java have deteriorated, with attacks and discrimination against minority groups sometimes taking place with the compliance of the provincial administration.

In Bogor and Bekasi, the respective local governments have refused to honor court orders instructing them to each reopen a local church. In other parts of West Java, the government has urged members of the Ahmadiyah Muslim minority to leave their faith.

In the election, Ahmad’s deputy is actor Deddy Mizwar, while Dede is paired with local official Lex Laksamana and Rieke with activist Teten Masduki.
