To The Editor:

Women in Islam are portrayed by numerous Western scholars in a negative light.

This is largely based on an inability to consult original sources of information. Much misinformation has been disseminated in the media, portraying a negative image of the Islamic woman to the world.

We Muslims believe God Almighty has great love for His creation. One manifestation of this love is that He desires that all people should treat one another with love, compassion and respect. God has commanded mankind to fulfill the rights of each other at all times. For this reason, He sent the Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, as a mercy for all mankind.

The real empowerment of women started during the time of Prophet Muhammad when he established their dignity by granting them respect as daughters, wives and mothers. This gave women the primary role in raising their children with good morals and strong characters.

Consequently, women in Islam are considered responsible for building nations by educating the future generation morally and spiritually. The standard of modesty prescribed in Islam gives women the freedom to work professionally as well and still act as role models in society. Hence, real empowerment lies in dignifying the various roles played by a woman.
