FORT WORTH — The TCU Muslim Student Association and other Muslim groups are hoping an event scheduled for this week on campus to denounce radical Islam will also help foster a better understanding of the religion.
U.S. officials have said both the suspects from the bombing at the Boston Marathon and a thwarted terror attack through Canada were motivated — at least in part — by radical Islam influences.
The event on Thursday night aims to provide a better insight into the religion.
"It is really timely, considering everything that is going on," said Nadine Nijem, the association's student president.
The student association was the event's official sponsor as of late Tuesday night. But other local Muslim groups were also supportive of the event.
"Jihad of the modern again should be a Jihad of the pen, where Muslims all over write and speak against extremism," said Mohamed Antwi, the local leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
Antwi said he hopes a couple of hundred people will turn out, even if it is simply to listen and have a discussion about religion in general.
The event is slated for 6 to 8 p.m. April 25 at the Annie Richardson Bass Building, 2800 West Bowie Street, in Fort Worth.
