TEMPO.CO, Tulungagung - A total of 100 people suddenly threw rocks against a mosque belonging to Ahmadiyah followers in Gempolan Village, Tulungagung, leaving the place heavily damaged on Thursday, May 16 evening. People came from Gempolan Village and were assisted by some young men from neighboring villages. "It was spontaneous and committed by young men," said Sarijan, Gempolan Village head whose house is located near the mosque, Friday .

People threw bricks and rocks towards the mosque. Inside, there were Tulungagung Ahmadiyah administrator and mosque keeper, Japar. Japar, 45, was turning off the lights when suddenly hundreds of rocks were flying into the place of prayer. Luckily the Gempolan Village’s Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) chairman, Imam Muslim, managed to extract the men from the location and hide them in his house.

The 8 x 10 meter place of prayer is heavily damaged due to the incident. Almost all of its glass windows are shattered. A Tempo observation revealed hundreds of bricks and rocks scattered inside and outside the mosque, including in the imam section of the mosque. A torn sarong is hung at the door.

Oddly enough ,the attack was witnessed by the Pakel Sector Police and the local Military Command. Officers witnessing the incident stood silent without making any attempt to prevent or stop the attack.

Gempolan Village administration director Supinah said that the incident took place after the residents held a meeting with Ahmadiyah administrator on Thursday, May 16. The meeting was a follow up to a report made by the locals who objected to Rizal Fazli Mubarrak’s presence.

Rizal is an Ahmadiyah missionary from Bogor who came to the village to revive the Ahmadiyah mosque in Gempolan Village for over the past month. "He has also been suspected as terrorist," said Supinah on Friday, May 17.
