Born in the small town of Jhang one of the most underdeveloped regions of the Pakistan, Professor Abdus Salam rose to become the pride of the Muslim world. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 1979 for his contribution to the development of the theory of unifying the electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces and thereby became the first ever Muslim to receive this unique distinction. Throughout his life, he worked exceptionally hard to inculcate the love and appreciation of science in young children and was an influential advocate of science for the developing world.

Dr. Abdus Salam a devoted Muslim once wrote:
“The Holy Quran enjoins us to reflect on the verities of Allah’s created laws of nature; however, that our generation has been privileged to glimpse a part of His design is a bounty and a grace for which I render thanks with a humble heart.”

To pay homage to Professor Abdus Salam, one of the greatest scientists of our time and to create interest of science in the youth of the community, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamat Canada organized the Abdus Salam Science fair on 17th November 2013. The science fair encouraged young children to think like scientists and provided them with a platform to display and share their skills, ideas and research with others. Several members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim youth association came up with very interesting and creative models and presentations to take part in the fair. They eagerly shared their findings with the audience and were glad to address any questions or comments.

Jaleed Ahmad, a ten year old who had worked six months for his presentation was amongst the numerous participants. He research encompassed the complex physical and mathematical phenomena of dimensions. “I have worked hard for six straight months to come up with my discovery” said Jaleed “quite frankly I am not really worried about winning; I am more concerned with sharing my research with every one so others can also benefit from it.” Jaleed’s father, Saeed said that he was proud of his son’s achievement and that the science fair served as an encouragement for his son to learn and discover something new.

Maulana Mubrak Nazir, the missionary in charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community highlighted the fact that the religion of Islam pays great emphasis on acquiring knowledge.  He quoted the Holy Prophet of Islam: “Seek Knowledge even if you have to go to china”. Nazir addressed the youth in the opening ceremony of the science fair and encouraged them to choose science as a career.  “Canada is a blessed country which loves knowledge, all the facilities are present here and it is very important for our children to make use of them” said Nazir “Our community and the world needs more Abdus Salams”
