German police said on Friday they were looking for suspects who left severed heads of five pigs on the building site of a mosque in the eastern city of Leipzig.

Police spokeswoman Birgit Hoehn said a fire brigade reported the incident Thursday after being called to the site to extinguish a fire in a refuse skip.

There have been right-wing protests for weeks against construction of the mosque, which will have minarets.

The house of prayer, which is funded by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, has been welcomed by the Leipzig city council as a sign of the university city's cosmopolitan style and tolerance.

It will be the first mosque outside of Berlin to be constructed in Germany's formerly communist eastern states.
