A Muslim elder in Auckland has launched the first Maori translation of the Koran, the holy book of the Islamic religion.
Shakil Ahmad Monir, 81, told Fairfax Media it took him six or seven years to learn the language.
"It was quite hard, but I didn't give up," he said.
Many Muslims object to the Koran being translated from Arabic, believing it should be read in the language used by the Prophet Mohammed but Ahmadiyya Muslims, the group to which Mr Monir belongs, believe the language the message is conveyed in is not important.
"There is nothing sinful, it is necessary and essential to hear the true message of the Koran for the people in the language they speak," said Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, leader of the Ahmadiyya group.
Tuheitia Paki, the Maori King, was also at the launch yesterday.
