Perspective: Emulate Mandela — rise above indifference


A befitting tribute to Mr. Mandela mandates the urgency to rise above rhetoric and truly encapsulate his example. Vying to rise above the differences and working toward peaceful coexistence would serve the world well.

The entire world is mourning the death of Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest icons of the last century. Mandela was a larger-than-life personality, and his appeal transcended South Africa. The name Mandela conjures up images of strength, resilience and steadfastness in the face of adversity. What set him apart from other leaders who share these traits is his unifying spirit and an ability to rise above differences and work for the greater good without resentment and bitterness.

Current world leaders need to adopt these distinguishing traits if they are serious about emulating Mandela's model of leadership. A befitting tribute to Mr. Mandela mandates the urgency to rise above rhetoric and truly encapsulate his example. Vying to rise above the differences and working toward peaceful coexistence would serve the world well.
