An interfaith symposium is returning to Lloydminster for the fourth year in a row, organized by The Ahmadiyya Muslim Women Association and hosted by Lakeland College.

Naurin Mangla, general secretary for the prairie region of the association, said the symposium’s purpose is to highlight  that “[In] faith it’s easy to see and pick out the differences between us. So we want to promote the similarities.”

The Feb. 1 symposium dubbed ‘Portrayal of my Faith in the Media… is this my Religion?’ will feature representatives from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Sikhism, and will touch on the commonalities these faiths face in terms of how their faith is seen and portrayed in the media.

Portrayal of my Faith in the Media  looks to dispel the stereotypes and misconceptions that the media often holds towards religion. The symposium is tailored specifically toward women of these faiths and will be a women only.

The event has taken place annually in Lloydminster for the past four years, each year hosting a handful keynote speakers from various religious groups discussing topics that are all relatable to the faiths in attendance.

“We pick different topics each year because we have similarities everywhere. Every topic we pick usually relates to what is going on in the world,” said Mangla.

This year the symposium begins at 4:30 p.m. for registration with the event starting at 5:00 p.m. on Feb. 1 in room 2038 on the second floor of Lakeland College.

Speakers include, Prakjakta Shirolkar speaking on behalf of Hindu faith, Joyce Dickson who is studying to become a Diaconal minister, Jennifer Brown who practices Judaism, Gursharan Kour Thatcher who follows the teachings of Sikhism, and Shazia Rehman representing Ahmadiyya Muslims.
