Lest we forget, Martin Luther King’s dream requires a lot more doing. Honoring his legacy should not stop at merely chanting slogans and trumpeting the lofty ideals that he espoused.
The road to a freer and more just America is still riddled with bumps. In Florida, issues such as voter-registration ID requirements and the tragedy of Trayvon Martin reflect the deep divide in our society.
If King were alive today, he would have certainly been proud to see a black man at the helm of affairs in the White House, but he would not have settled for that. A fitting tribute to King’s struggle requires an unwavering commitment to rid society of the deep ills of the racial divide that continue to undermine his historic dream.
