What happens when you take five different speakers from different religions, put them on stage at the Vic Juba Community Theatre, and ask the question “Why does God allow suffering?”
This Friday at the theatre, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at of Lloydminster will be hosting a symposium on that theme.
The Interfaith Symposium, which will last two hours, will have five different speakers discuss their religion and why they believe god allows suffering.
The religions that will be represented at the symposium are Christianity, Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism and Islam.
“Reverend Paul DuVal will be representing Christianity, Mr.Kumar Balachander will represent Hindu Society, Mr. Taha Mustafa will represent Ahmadiyya Muslim views, Mr. Rick Brown will represent Jewish faith and Mr. Amrit Paul will present the Sikhism point of view on the topic,” said event organizer Muzassar Ahmed.
Ahmed said that the symposium is also bringing the religious world together, under one roof for a night.
“We are living in a planet with a variety of religions on it and we are looking to bring together those religions to learn to love each other,” he said.
“We are a community and we need to bring together the larger community.”
The event, which is free to attend, is open to anyone interested in learning about the different philosophies in the community.
“Anyone can come and listen to the speakers speak on the issue. We have a wide range of speakers from different religious backgrounds speaking, so anyone is welcome to come to the event,” Ahmed said.
After the five speakers discuss their reason they believe god allows suffering, Ahmed said audience participation will be invited afterwards.
“For a half hour after our guests speak, audience members will be asked to write questions down on a piece of paper and ask the group of speakers a questions,” he said.
Ahmed said this gives the audience members the chance to hear from the different religions in the world.
Registration information is available on the Vic Juba Community Theatre’s website.
The symposium begins at 6 p.m on April 4.
