A public-spirited schoolboy is one of Britain’s first ever winners of a Points of Light Award.

Zafar Ahmad, 16, was handed the prize by the Prime Minister at a special ceremony at 10 Downing Street.

In February the selfless teenager gave up his half term to help flood victims in Staines and Chertsey.

His efforts saw him recognised as a ‘Flood Hero’ by the ITV show Daybreak.

Along with four other winners, he was invited to Downing Street on Monday, where he received the award in person from Daivd Cameron.

The Points of Light Award recognises people who have made outstanding contributions in their community.

Zafar, who is from Southfields, said: "It was a real honour and it was amazing meeting the Prime Minister.

"He said I was very young to be doing what I did, and that he appreciates my efforts to help people in Britain."

Zafar is a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, which encourages young muslims to get involved in community work.

Jamal Akbar, AMYA youth co-ordinator, said: "I extremely proud of him for volunteering. I would like it add it was also a team effort, with many people from the charity getting involved."

Points of Light Awards will be given out every day to volunteers who have benefited their community with Zafar just the fifth person to ever receive the award.

He will be raising more money for flood victims when he takes part in the MKA 10K charity run in Battersea Park on May 4.
