"When our leaders are stealing and looting our treasury, they won’t remember religion; it is when they want to exploit us that they use religion.”

… Says Boko Haram members are not Muslims

The Federal Government has been advised to be wary of the kinds of offers it will accept from countries trying to help the nation in fighting the Boko Haram insurgency.

Giving the advice on Tuesday was the Amir of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at of Nigeria, Dr. Mashhud Adenrele Fashola while addressing newsmen on the state of the nation. Considering the outcome of such assistance to some nations of the world in the past, he urged the Federal Government to be selective of the kind of assistance to be offered in order to avoid continuous war and enjoined the helping countries to be sincere and avoid vested interests. “Nigeria has helped many countries to restore peace in the past without any vested interest and other super nations of the world should do same sincerely.”

Dr. Fashola also called on Nigerians to be cautious and not allow evilpeople to use religion to exploit or separate them. “Those parading themselves as BokoHaram members are not true Muslims, there is nothing Islamic in their actions and words. Islam strictly upholds freedom of worship for all and abhors compulsion in matters of faith, admonishes religious tolerance, charity and help to all irrespective of race, tribe or religion. All good men across all religions and tribe should come together to save Nigeria from these evil-minded people. When our leaders are stealing and looting our treasury, they won’t remember religion; it is when they want to exploit us that they use religion.”

According to him, there should not be any negotiation with any insurgency group like Boko Haram because they are murderers. He called for continuous prayer for good leadership in the country. He also advocated for better emoluments for police officers with the recruitment of the best brains; men and women of integrity into Nigerian police force with provision of needed modern equipment, saying policing and law-enforcement are very crucial to security of lives and property.

On the ongoing confab, he said the confab should not be pre-occupied with tribal and geo-political differences saying our problem has to do with ignorant, narrow-minded and self-centred leaders who exploit the tribal, religious and geo-political differences of the nation for selfish and materialistic interests. “The confab should concentrate on how to ensure, accountability, transparency, religious and ethnic tolerance, peaceful coexistence, security of all, social justice, equitable and sustainable socio-economic development at all regional levels.”
