Perspective: Abducting Islam

Kidnapping girls, all of whom are students, is not an Islamic act. Boko Haram is humiliating itself, its members, its nation and the religion it claims to preserve.

Re: "Extremists threaten to sell abducted schoolgirls," May 6. As an Ahmadi Muslim woman,

I am dismayed to see yet another extremist group using the name of Islam to carry out its barbaric acts. Islam encourages people to attain education no matter how many hurdles they might have to jump over to do so.

Thus, kidnapping girls, all of whom are students, is not an Islamic act. Boko Haram is humiliating itself, its members, its nation and the religion it claims to preserve.

As for the treatment of women, Islam teaches us that a daughter is Allah's blessing to her parents, not a burden or object to be mistreated. I hope these hundreds of blessings are returned safely to their families.
