UK: Bipartisan group of lawmakers seeks release of Ahmadi Muslim prisoners in Saudi Arabia

A bipartisan group of lawmakers in the UK has taken up the matter of two Ahmadī Muslims brothers incarcerated in Saudi Arabia because of their faith.

All Party Parliamentary Group for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has written to The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Britain asking for an immediate release of the Ahmadi prisoners.

Sultan Hamid Marzooq al-Enezi and Saud Falih Awad al-Enezi were arrested on May 14, 2012, for interrogation and later moved to an undisclosed prison on apostasy charge for joining the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

“Two years ago to this day, two Muslims were arrested by police in ‘Ar-‘Ar in Saudi Arabia for the alleged crime of apostasy,” wrote four members of the parliamentary group, MPs Siobhain McDonagh, Jason McCartney, Lord Tope, and  Mike Gapes, to the Saudi Ambassador, Prince Mohamed Bin Nawaf Bin Abdulaziz. “Two years on, they are still in detention and remain held without charge.”

Lawmakers further said the family of the prisoners has been denied access to them for the past 18 months. “Despite repeated attempts to attain their whereabouts and status no information has been forthcoming from the Saudi authorities.”

The parliamentary group strongly asserted their concerns about the extreme persecution of Ahmadi Muslims in several parts of the Muslim world.

“This is unacceptable and goes against our shared universal human right of freedom in matters of faith,” the lawmakers wrote.

The lawmakers reminded Saudi Arabia of its “unique position in the Muslim world” as a “custodian of the holiest sites of Islam” and where “the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) granted freedom to followers of all faiths in line with the commandment of The Holy Quran, which states, ‘There should be no compulsion in religion’ (Ch. 2:V.257).”

“As custodians of such sacred sites we urge you to act on your faith’s noble teachings and release both Ahmadis forthwith,” the lawmakers said.

A similar effort is taken up by a bipartisan caucus of the US lawmakers also where 70 members of the US Congress have demanded the release of the Ahmadi prisoners in Saudi Arabia.
