Yendi (NR), Aug.24, GNA - The people of Zakorli, a suburb of Yendi in collaboration with the Yendi Catholic Peace Centre at the weekend held a peace mediation meeting aimed at resolving a protracted chieftaincy problem in the area.
The meeting was a follow up to an earlier workshop on mediation organised by the centre last July at Yendi to foster peace.
Two people contested for the Zakorli skin and one Alhassan Alhassan was enskined as Zakorli Lana as against Abu Azumah.
The Most Reverend Vincent Sowah Boi-Nai, Bishop of the Yendi Diocese of the Catholic Church said mediation is necessary to give the two feuding parties the platform to find lasting solution to the disagreement.
He said whenever there is a violent conflict woman and children suffer most and advised the two sides to seek peace to better the lives of the people.
He said many of the challenges are due to illiteracy because no one keeps records of historical antecedents on chieftaincy, which creates room for misinterpretations.
“In a society where there is no unity there cannot be development and investment,” he said.
Bishop Boi-Nai who is also the Patron of the Centre reminded the people that during the 2002 chieftaincy conflict there was a high number of divorce cases and division in families because of disunity.
He appealed to the royal families to abide by the customs and traditions of the people without which there would be continuous misunderstanding.
Mr Peter Atia, Secretary of the Centre said the mediation meeting brings to a total of 105 peace meetings the facility has so far organised in the area for various groups in other to find solutions to conflicts and disagreements.
He said the peace mediation meeting was instituted in 1994 when there was a conflict among some ethnic groups in the Northern Region.
Mr Atia said as peace builders they do not judge but facilitate for peace, unity and development.

During the open forum some of the participants called on the peace builders to advise the youth and the women to use decent language as a way of finding lasting solutions to problems in the area.
