Sri Lanka - Pakistan talks on drug and asylum issues


The High Commission said the issues would be discussed at the forthcoming bilateral consultations between the foreign secretaries of both countries, scheduled to be held this week.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka will hold talks over the 'burning' issues Sri Lanka is facing at the moment; drug smuggling, asylum seekers and suspension of visa on arrival facility to Pakistanis, the Pakistan High Commission revealed.

The High Commission said the issues would be discussed at the forthcoming bilateral consultations between the foreign secretaries of both countries, scheduled to be held this week. "Both countries enjoy strong friendly relations."

Any issues that may arise are resolved through mutual consultation," the High Commissioner said.
There has been large hauls of heroin confiscated in the past months, by Sri Lanka Customs, directly sent from Pakistan with Sri Lankan dealers being involved.

According to the Police Narcotics Bureau, 421 High Court cases, related to drug offences, are being heard and in the Magistrate's Courts the number has increased to 585.

According to Police Spokesman, SSP Ajith Rohana, a Pakistani is in custody for smuggling drugs to Sri Lanka. However, there are four Sri Lankan suspects who were arrested when a major raid was conducted, he added.

From January till end July, the Customs detected 226kgs of heroin smuggled from Pakistan, the SSP said.
