The new UN Human Rights Chief Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein says he attaches great importance to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) mandated probe on Sri Lanka.
In the statement that will be delivered at the opening of the 27th session of the UNHRC on 08 September 2014, Prince Zeid encouraged the Sri Lankan authorities to cooperate with the investigation process in the interests of justice and reconciliation.
"I attach great importance to the investigation on Sri Lanka mandated by this Council, on which OHCHR will report later in the session. I encourage the Sri Lankan authorities to cooperate with this process in the interests of justice and reconciliation," he said.
Sri Lanka maintains that the probe is an unnecessary and unethical intrusion into the island nations' sovereignty and the government has rejected the investigative panel appointed by his predecessor Navi Pillay and announced that the OHCHR team will not be given permission to conduct an investigation in the country.
The new rights chief is scheduled to present on 24 September an oral update from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation in Sri Lanka as a follow up to its resolution adopted in March establishing a commission of inquiry.
The High Commissioner expressed alarm "at threats currently being levelled against the human rights community in Sri Lanka, as well as prospective victims and witnesses."
He also deplored the recent incitement and violence against the country's Muslim and Christian minorities.
