WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo Counties) applauds the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA as they hold the fourth annual American Red Cross blood drive September 11, 2014 on Capitol Hill. This event launches the 2014 “Muslims for Life” blood drive campaign, a national effort honoring the victims of 9/11.
“Thirteen years have come and gone, but we will never forget 9/11,” says Speier. “Terrorists took the lives of thousands of Americans in New York City, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania. That day we all watched the heroism of first responders, and over the years we all watched the strength of families working to rebuild. In their horrifying act of violence, these extremists hijacked the faith of Islam, a peaceful religion practiced by millions around the world. We can’t allow their views to define Islam. In remembrance of the lives lost, I hope others will join this nationwide movement and donate blood. Every pint we donate can save three lives and heal many more.”

“The perpetrators of the horrific attacks on our country 13 years ago do not represent Islam or Muslims,” says Naseem Mahdi, Vice President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, who is overseeing the campaign. “Islam values all human life and fundamentally stands for peace. Through this campaign, we illustrate that the only blood we shed is to save lives.”
“The American Red Cross truly appreciates the efforts of communities across America, like the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, for remembering the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks and commemorating the day by hosting a Red Cross blood drive,” said Linda Voss, Chief Executive Officer for the American Red Cross Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Services Region. “Donating blood in remembrance of the September 11th anniversary is a respectful way to honor those who perished and helps rekindle the spirit of unity and compassion that swept our nation in the aftermath of that tragic event.”
On Capitol Hill, the blood drive will be held at the Rayburn House Office Building Foyer on Thursday, September 11th from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
