With the recent terrorist acts of extremist groups like ISIS and Al-Qaida, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community held an open house on Saturday, at the Cornwall Public Library to introduce the peaceful teachings of Islam to the community.

“The purpose of this open house is to primarily support peace and to remove misconceptions about Islam,” said Muneer Ahmad Khan, a representative of the AMC.

“In this regard also the purpose is to teach people the true and peaceful teachings of Islam,” he said.

The open house allowed residents of Cornwall to learn what the Holy Quran teaches about freedom of speech and blasphemy. Cornwall wasn’t the only city hosting this event — the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association started a nation wide campaign to hold open houses in 33 different communities across Canada. One of the messages they wanted to get across was Islam does not support or promote terrorism.

Khan said although the turnout was disappointing, they did have the opportunity to also go out into the community and talk to people about Islam.

“We’ve had a few guests come in, but not as many as we liked. However during the promotion of the open house we had the opportunity to engage the public and give them our message to some degree,” he said.

Khan said the response from the public has been very favourable.

When asked if he felt there was a lot of Islamaphobia in the area Khan replied, “If there is, then it is our job to help remove it. And this is the purpose of this event.”

Khan said they have held several open houses and had no plans to stop.

“What the world needs the most of now is peace,” said Khan. “Rather than straining efforts to technological advancement, one should strive to put efforts in their own spheres of authority, everyone has their own sphere of authority whether one is a member of the media, or an employee or a family person, everyone has a sphere where they can spread peace. The need of the time is peace. What is the purpose of technological advancing a world if you don’t have a world in the future?”
