Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association South West (AMWA) gathered in Cardiff, to promote the peaceful teaching of their branch of Islam.
Women said misunderstanding among non-Muslims and Muslims themselves spark intolerance and fear which can lead to extremism.

1. What is the role of British Muslim women in the UK today?
The role of a Muslim woman is like that of any other British citizen to make a valuable contribution to the society in which she is living. But there are additional responsibilities and expectations born out of the fact of a political and social circumstance over which an individual has no control. However it can be taken as a wonderful opportunity for a British Muslim woman to make a public demonstration of the fact that she is making a valuable contribution to society. This may be through organising lectures, interfaith gatherings, fundraising for local causes and other such like acts. Fact is, a modern British Muslim woman not only has to be good but has to be seen to be good- ie to show she is a part and parcel of life here and our future is here.
2. Difficulties you are facing?
Well the fact is we can't carry on as we did before and live our ordinary lives. We are in extra ordinary circumstances. The evil acts of a tiny deluded minority have maligned the faith of millions of people. Evil is being perpetrated in the name of my faith so it behoves us now to demonstrate what our faith is really all about. In this respect the aim of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community is exemplary with its values of love for all hatred for none and its commitment to make a significant contribution to British values and society.
3. How do you get the message across that Islam is about peace and tolerance?
Well, the best way is to live the teachings of true Islam. Live the values that we believe in. We have to shows through action and not just talk that Islam is a beautiful religion and universal in its teachings. When we look at the evil and oppression in so called Muslim countries, we have to show this is occurring in defiance of Islam and not because of it. In many respect British values of looking after your neighbour, caring for those who are less well off are aspects of an Islamic values. We should do more to extol the virtues of our commonalities rather than differences.
