Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at The Gambia, in collaboration with the Lord Mayors of Kanifing and Banjul municipalities, on23 April 2015 donated bags of rice, sugar, onions and drums of cooking oil to disaster victims and the poor and needy families in Kanifing and Banjul municipalities.
At Kanifing Municipal Council, Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at donated 30 bags of rice, 8 bags of sugar, 15 bags of onion and 30 drums of 5-litre cooking oil.
In Banjul they also donated 20 bags of rice, 6 bags of sugar, 10 bags of onion and 20 drums of 5-litre cooking oil.
Speaking at the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), Alhaji Ebrahima Mbowe, in his introductory remarks, thanked the Almighty Allah and the Prophet for the day.
He also thanked the Amir of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at The Gambia, Mayor Yankuba Colley and all present at the occasion.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at held prayers on Gambia's Independence Day, he recalled, adding that they were pleased to donate to Gambian Muslims as part of events marking the 50-year Independence celebration of The Gambia.
He described the President of The Gambia as Allah's chosen one and therefore prayed for him.
"The donations were done to only gain Allah's reward," he stated, adding that they are always praying to be able to support more Muslims in the country.
KMC Mayor Hon. Yankuba Colley, in his remarks, thanked and appreciated Allah for making it possible for Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at to donate such food items to the less fortunate people in the society.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, he thanked Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at for reaching out to the less fortunate, saying one of the teachings of the Holy Prophet is a good Muslim should "care and share at all times with Muslims and people in need of help.
He called on the donors to keep up the good act, saying: "This is all about religion - you do not force people to join but as you move on, people begin to understand and one day we will stand as a Muslim Uma that will always defend the interest of Muslims."
Speaking at the Banjul City Council, as part of the handing-over ceremony, Alhaji Ebrahima Mbowe said that in 1965 when the Gambia gained her independence the Amir of Ahamadiyya Muslim Jama'at led the prayers and prayed for the continuation of peace and development in the country. "That is what Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at stands for as their principle," he said.
He added that the gesture towards the victims is part of their faith and service to mankind.
The Lord Mayor of Banjul City Council, Hon. Abdoulie Bah, thanked the donor for their wonderful gesture, saying sharing with and caring for mankind and society is very important.
He commended Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at for their concern for needy families in the country.
