Young carers in the Selby district have benefitted from a cash boost donated by a regional Muslim charity.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association selected Rosie Corrigan in her role as Mayor of Selby to hand over £500 to a charity of her choosing, and she picked Selby Young Carers.

Funding controller for the national charity, and part of the elder’s group, Arif Ahmad, said that the association had searched for groups and charities in rural areas, like Selby, who would see a benefit from the funds.

“We’re happy to provide this money to the young carers,” said Mr Ahmad. “The funds come from a central pot of cash which our organisation builds up through charity events each year, one of which is our famous charity walk.

“The idea is that local mayors, charities and groups can gain our cash funding, so long as it is money that will benefit the community. We want to try and help raise the profile of our faith and lack of awareness in populations which are not significantly Muslim orientated.”

Rosie, who has shown her support to young people within the Selby area over the years, said: “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association for their kind donation which I accepted on behalf of Selby Young Carers.

“The Young Carers are a group of incredible local children and young people who have a caring responsibility, usually for a family member.

“The group provides support, friendship and activities for the children for those who attend. It’s a group very close to my heart and I am delighted that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association chose to come to Selby to donate some of the proceeds of their annual charity walk to this fantastic cause.”
