Monday was the hottest day of the season in New Delhi when high temps in parts of the city touched 114 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to The Times of India (TOI), this was the second highest May temperature in the capital in more than a decade.

The report blamed Pakistan for sending the extreme weather, which the paper says, will continue for several more days - before Mari Amman ("Mother Mari") - the goddess of rain - will send some relief.

TOI said, quoting Met officials, the heat transfer from south Pakistan through westerly winds is responsible for New Delhi's heatwave.

"Super-hot winds from Pakistan are giving a killer edge to the heat wave which has claimed more than 500 lives across India," the newspaper claimed. "The loo blowing across most of north India is transporting this heat from Sindh into this region."

"In Sindh, temperatures have shot up to 49, even 50 degrees," said one Met official according to the newspaper. "Westerly winds are bringing with them this extreme, dry heat through a process called advection (transport)."
