Members of all faiths need to speak out against the long-standing racial prejudice in America that has been exposed in recent months by ruthless acts of police brutality on African-Americans.
Religious leaders also need to acknowledge a degree of responsibility because in the heyday of slavery, due to both ignorance as well as self-interest, preachers twisted passages from the Bible to justify the mass enslavement of Africans and their forced conversion to Christianity.
I believe the founder of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad, represented the true essence of faith when he unequivocally declared 1400 years ago, in front of thousands at a historic farewell address, that a white person had no superiority over a black person nor a black person over a white person, except by piety and good works.
As a nation, irrespective of our belonging, we have a collective responsibility to make a peaceful push towards accountability for abuses by those in authority and to embrace the God-given equality of all races.
