One of the fundamental pillars of Islam is worship to the Creator, and submission to His will. This applies to all aspects of our lives. A beautiful example of this was on display at Baitul Hameed Mosque in Chino, California on May 3, 2015.
Over 350 men, women and children gathered to offer Salat ul Istiska, or a prayer for rain, in the drought-stricken climate of Southern California. Imam Zafarullah Hanjra, regional missionary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, gave a brief sermon describing the importance of this prayer, which was performed by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) in times of drought. Various incidents from the life of the Prophet were mentioned, with faith-inspiring examples of how God sent down rain on the people in times of need. Imam Hanjra then lead the congregation in prayer outside under a blistering sun. He wore a white sheet to follow the practice of the Prophet, who the traditions say would don a covering during the prayer for rain, and would then invert it after reciting the prayer.
Many of those in attendance at the event, including children and the elderly, were quite moved by this display of Islamic worship. This was the first ever Salat-ul Istiska performed at Baitul Hameed Mosque.
In his Friday sermon on April 3, 2015, the Khalifa of Islam, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, shared anecdotes of villages in Africa where people accepted Islam after witnessing the results of Salat-ul Istiska by the local Imam.
California is in the midst of a severe and historic drought which has negatively impacted both the environment and the economy. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Los Angeles chapter plans to hold an interfaith community event on the topic of praying for rain in the near future.
