Despite announcing that 10 militants had been sentenced to life for the attack, it has now been revealed that most were cleared.

Most of the men supposedly jailed over the attempted murder of Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai were actually cleared, it has now emerged.

The revelation appears to contradict what legal and security officials said just a few months ago, when they announced that 10 men had been sentenced to life imprisonment for the attack.

Malala was shot in the head by Taliban militants in October 2012 while she and her friends were on a school bus.

The attack sent shockwaves around the world, and propelled Malala into the international spotlight as a symbol of defiance in the fight against militants.

The suspects were arrested during a major anti-terrorism operation, but their trial was kept secret until it had concluded. As a result, the media were not at the court hearings.

The Swat district police chief, Salim Khan Marwat, says contrary to earlier statements about the case, all but two of the 10 men were cleared of the charges.

"Two of them were sentenced to life imprisonment while eight others were acquitted," he told the AFP news agency.

"I have no knowledge where the eight persons are now - either in military custody or released."

Public prosecutor Sayed Naeem, who announced the original verdict in April, now says he was misquoted by journalists and refused to discuss any further details of the case.

Malala, who is now aged 17, survived the attempt on her life and has since become the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous and determined fight for children to have the right to go to school.
