To mark the start of the holy month of Ramadhan, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Hillingdon held an interfaith event, titled The Significance of Fasting, at the Baitul Amn Mosque in Royal Lane, Hillingdon.

The event was attended by 85 guests, including the Mayor of Hillingdon, a Rabbi, several priests and individuals from many different religions, professions and backgrounds.

Guests were shown around an exhibition on the teachings of Islam, on the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the Holy Qur’an.

The event was conducted by the Imam, Mansur Ahmed, who told guests: “Arranging interfaith events and inviting faith leaders and people from other faiths and none to our mosques is not based just on a personal desire but in fact is the teaching of Islam.”

Following a welcome address from the President of the Ahamdiyya Muslim Association, Sohail Qureshi, Rabbi Lea Muehlstein, of the Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue, spoke of the significance of fasting in Judaism.

The associate priest of St Mary the Virgin Church in Denham, the Rev Beverley Pinnell, explained the significance of the practice in Christianity.

Young children of the community recited a poem, Love For All Hatred For None, the motto of the community, before Imam Ata ur Rehman Khalid enlightened the audience on the significance of fasting in Islam.

The Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr George Cooper, praised the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and urged more inter-faith initiatives.

To finish, everyone was served a traditional Asian dinner.
