Sir, As a proud Brit and just one of the 7,000-plus British youth members of the peaceful Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I find there to be no conflict in being British and my Islamic faith. However, I do find there to be an issue with David Cameron’s presumption that we cannot deny “a connection between the religion of Islam and the extremists”.
Islam’s foundation is the Koran which clearly rejects extremism and terrorism of any kind. I would not disagree if Mr Cameron were to say there is a link between terrorism and certain Muslims. This I believe is a very simple but significant distinction and the UK government should acknowledge this. The Caliphate of Isis is completely un-Islamic and brutal. But it must be remembered that the concept of Caliphate is a central Islamic concept, and there is nothing wrong with the concept as long as it is the true peaceful Caliphate. The tens of millions of Ahmadiyya Muslims across the globe have already been living under a spiritual Caliphate for more than 100 years. And the Caliphate has guided the Ahmadiyya Muslims to the true peaceful teachings of Islam of loyalty to one’s nation.
As a result, Ahmadi Muslims in Britain typically raise £400,000 a year for British charities such as Marshal Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and Macmillan Cancer Support, and set a prime example of British Muslims who actively contribute to the fabric of British society.
