Perspective: We are at war with an imaginary Islam -- the real story of America and the Muslim world | Raymond William Baker

No comments:

Of the “many Islams,” America has for decades actively fostered and manipulated its own useful preferences. These “preferred Islams” of earlier periods are part of the story of the Islamist Imaginary of our own.

American propaganda exaggerates the power and moral depravity of the Islamic enemy, in the service of our empire

The United States is at war with a very different, mythic Islam of its own making that has nothing at all to do with this Islam of the Qur’an. To make sense of that conjured threat, scholarly studies of Islam or Islamic movements are of no help at all. Even the examination of the real-world history and practice of empire has limited value, unless the perceived Islamic dimension is considered. The American imperial project cannot be brought into clear view without assessment of the distinctive rationale that the Islamist Imaginary provides. The task is not an easy one. The Islamist Imaginary has no simple and unitary existence. Rather, it is a complex amalgam that shapes both the delusions of empire and a conjured threat to imperial power into a co-evolving composite. It is a “difficult whole,” in the helpful language of complexity theory.

The Conservatives wanting the Supreme Court of Canada to consider whether face coverings can be banned at citizenship ceremonies is “just a political ploy to pander to their base,” says Niagara Falls Liberal candidate Ron Planche.

“They don’t need to do this,” said Planche. “The law is clear on this issue.”

Zunera Ishaq, a devout, 29-year-old Muslim woman, had refused to take part in a citizenship ceremony because she would have to show her face under a rule change implemented by the Conservative government in 2011.

The Conservatives want women to be required to show their faces not only at a point during the process of applying for citizenship, but also during the citizenship ceremony.

I am confused by Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson’s comments while he was on NBC’s Meet the Press.

When asked about a Muslim being president, he stated, “I absolutely would not agree with that.”

Expressing that a religion cannot be consistent with American principles and values, he further said that Islam is not consistent with the Constitution.

I completely disagree with Carson. Core Islamic values align beautifully with American values. Freedom of speech, racial and sexual equality, freedom of religion and many other concepts are explicitly exhibited in the Quran, the life and sayings of the prophet Muhammad or both.

Regarding the Sept. 17 news article “Outcry after Muslim teen is detained over homemade clock”: The possibility of arrest and humiliation, as in the case of high school student Ahmed Mohamed for inventing a clock, has unfortunately become the new normal for the millions of Muslims in the country. It is true that we live in an era of heightened security, but to subject a 14-year-old child to such trauma when he told his engineering teacher about his invention demonstrates that the ongoing Islamophobia is spreading like wildfire in the country.

Islam, like any other religion, can be misinterpreted and misused by people with agendas. Such has been the case with all religions of the world at one time or another. In our own time, ISIS and al-Qaida terror groups are perverting the true teaching of Islam for political gains. There are millions of sound, hard-working and law-abiding American Muslims who categorically reject all forms of violence perpetrated in the name of Islam. Painting every Muslim with the same brush is against the norms of a just and fair society.

Six people were arrested in connection with the attack, around 45 km from Delhi, sparking protests that led to police firing, damage to vehicles and injuries to a 20-year-old welder who works for the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) facility in the area.

This week’s tragedy at the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca known as the haj, in which hundreds perished during a stampede of believers, has been received with sadness by Bermuda’s Muslims.

“Muslims travel for the haj with hearts full of devotion and love for God Almighty — 717 lives lost while engaged in this spiritual endeavour is very saddening.”

The crush occurred during a final major rite of devotion, a symbolic stoning of the Devil in which seven stones are cast at pillars known as Jamarat along the route.

The Baitul Futuh Mosque, in London Road, Morden, where 70 firefighters tackled a blaze which started close to midday on Saturday, has remained closed while police investigate the cause of the fire, which started in admin offices and destroyed a community hall.

The prayer area of the mosque, described as the largest in western Europe, was untouched by the blaze, as was the motto emblazoned on its wall: "Love For All, Hatred For None".

Police have bailed a 14-year-old boy who had been arrested on suspicion of arson. A 16-year-old man who had also been arrested on suspicion of arson was released with no further action.

A Metropolitan Police statement released yesterday morning said the attack was not being treated as a "hate crime".

Members of the Chicago Ahmadiyya Muslim Community celebrated Eid-ul-Adha, a holy day honoring Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his only son  for God’s pleasure, on Thursday September 24th at Baet ul Jamay Mosque, Glen Ellyn.  Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated at the end of the hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca where millions of people gather for the unity of God and the oneness of Islam.  This event consisted of 800 Ahmadi Muslim members from different parts of Chicago and its surrounding area and also few non-Muslim guests.  The event started with the Eid-ul-Adha prayers followed by sermon by Imam Shamshad Nasir.

Imam Shamshad Nasir in his sermon explained the true meaning behind the celebration of Eid-ul-Adha and the sacrifice Abraham made for God’s pleasure.  He said this Eid is not only about sacrificing animal for God’s pleasure but is also about willing to sacrifice one's most precious object in order to receive God’s pleasure.  As Prophet Abraham was willing to sacrifice his most precious thing, his son, only for God; we should also strive for that high spirituality.  He also said that on these joyous occasions we should never forget the less fortunate people and sacrifice our time and money only for the sake of God’s pleasure.

A French school has provoked outrage for making Muslim and Jewish pupils wear red discs around their necks at lunchtime.

Staff at Piedalloues primary school in Auxerre, Burgundy, ordered students who did not eat pork to wear red discs, while those who did not eat meat were handed yellow disks.

Of the school’s 1,500 pupils, 18 were made to wear the discs who were then withdrawn from the school by angry parents and community leaders. Parents and leaders said the disks were reminiscent of the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear under the Nazi occupation.

“It’s revolting. It reminds you of the darkest times,” said a local councilor, Malika Ounès. “Practices like this are not acceptable. No one has the right to impose this on children.”

As an American Muslim, I was surprised to read presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson’s recent remarks that a Muslim should never be U.S. president.

Perhaps Dr. Carson overlooked the fact that the Constitution (Article VI, Clause 3) states that religion should not be a determinant in any public office in the United States.

Perhaps he should be reminded that Thomas Jefferson, our third president, engaged with Islam and fought to ensure the rights of Muslims. Or rather than look that far back, he should follow the example of another prominent and highly respected member of his party, Colin Powell, who in 2008 responded to the notion of then presidential candidate Barack Obama being Muslim by reminding us that he wasn’t one, and even if he was a Muslim, it shouldn’t matter because the Constitution protects religious freedom.

The last papal visit was a long seven years ago.

American Catholics feel elated that the Holy Father once again graces America with his presence. For them, Pope Francis coming to the United States and speaking to Congress is like the feeling you get when you introduce your friends from church to your friends from school and both groups get along. Catholic youth will be giddy with joy and share their excitement with their fellow classmates of all diverse backgrounds.

This is where we reach a fork in the road. Most religions do not have a global spiritual leader. As a result, many will not be able to share the joy because they will not have the ability to relate to this event's significance. Some will look on, happy for Catholics, others will miss the event altogether, and still others will wish their faith had a leadership structure that kept themselves organized worldwide.

Faith-based schools should teach all religions –Fashola

The Executive Director, Fadhl-i-Omar Ahmadiyya Muslim Education Organisation, Alhaji Mashud Fashola, has said there is nothing wrong in faith-based schools teaching all religions, provided they are still allowed to dictate their norms.

He said, “There is nothing wrong if you allow all faith-based schools to teach all religions. Only God is wise. I cannot say my own way is the best but we should deploy our faith to serve humanity. Bulgaria's Orthodox Church has called on its government not to let any more Muslim refugees into the country to prevent an "invasion".

The Balkan EU member has largely been bypassed by the hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing conflict and poverty, many of whom set off from Greece through neighbouring Macedonia and Serbia towards northern Europe.

But Bulgaria has still seen Syrians, Afghans and Iraqis cross its southeastern border from Turkey.

Prince George will hear from six religious scholars Sunday at the city's 10th World Religions Conference, an interfaith event meant to foster understanding.

"It's a unique opportunity to learn something, (an) aspect of religion that you have never heard about," said event organizer Rizwan Peerzada. "It really gives (the audience) a perspective of six religions."

The free event, at UNBC's Canfor Theatre, will feature speakers from Bah', Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic and Sikh faiths.

"This is an opportunity to know someone's faith and that faith is actually culture also," he said. "It enhances our understanding of each person, each faith and the community."

The conference - with the theme Existence of God: Myth or Reality? - is hosted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a Canada-wide organization that has more than 100 chapters. It represents a revival movement within Islam that believes Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who died in 1908, of Qadian, India, to be a messiah.

These are not mere slogans. Rather, these are various campaigns undertaken by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA.

“Muslims for Life” is an award-winning campaign in which Muslims are coming together nationwide to arrange blood donation drives. Over the last four years, more than 40,000 pints of blood have been collected to save more than 100,000 lives beyond boundaries of faith or color.

The goal is to shed our own blood to save lives and to commemorate the victims of 9/11—a unique response to this tragedy.

This year again, “Muslims for Life” was officially launched by a blood drive on Capitol Hill on Sept. 11. It was greatly reassuring to see it get bipartisan support.

“Love for All, Hatred for None“, is the motto of the Ahmaddiya community globally. It is a community that is openly persecuted in Pakistan where the State structures are built to discriminate against them after the dictator Zia Ul Haque introduced stringent laws into the country as a way of building up support with militant groups who regarded themselves as moral guardians of Islam.
Just last night, we were included into a range of discussions that pointed to a page on the Muslim Council of Britain’s web-site. The feelings of some individuals were inflamed by a post on the Muslim Council of Britain’s web-site which we have listed below. Coincidently the post on the MCB web-site listed the Morden mosque, (then being built), as not being a mosque on the basis of theological differences.

Members of Merced’s Muslim community observed Eid al-Adha, a holy day honoring Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son to God, in a mood of dutiful reflection Thursday following the deaths of more than 700 pilgrims marking the holiday in Saudi Arabia.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated at the end of the hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca. Pilgrims who travel to Mecca participate in many rituals during the hajj, such as circling the sacred site of Kaaba, the stoning of the devil and many rounds of prayer. Completing the hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam.

About 2 million people traveled to Saudi Arabia for this year’s hajj. More than 700 people were crushed or trampled to death when two giant waves of pilgrims collided at an intersection near a holy site in the valley of Mina, The Associated Press reported.

GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (WLS) -- There is worldwide mourning after a tragic stampede at the annual hajj pilgrimage killed 717 people at Mina, one of the holiest sites in Islam, in Saudi Arrabia.

Mina is where a symbolic devil stoning takes place towards the end of the hajj, before pilgrims continue on to Mecca. The stampede occurred on Eid al-Adah, a festival that highlights the need for the faithful to submit to God.

Streets around Islam's holiest sites were littered with the bodies of the dead and injured Thursday morning, trampled as two massive groups of pilgrims from different directions converged near the spot where they're supposed to carry out the symbolic devil-stoning. The tragedy was on the minds of the faithful at the mosque in Glen Ellyn

For Syed Fazal and other Muslims around the world, Thursday was a day of sacrifice.

Fazal, general secretary of the Philadelphia regional chapter of the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam, was one of more than a billion in the Muslim faith to celebrate the Eid al-Adha (EED-al-ODD-ha), or "festival of the sacrifice." One of the most sacred days on the Muslim calendar, the holiday commemorates the belief that Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son Ishmael at God's command.

The observance marks the end of the annual five-day pilgrimage to Mecca, or Hajj, which every Muslim is expected to make once in their lifetime.

An angry mob in Pakistan torched the home of a Christian family and attempted to burn them alive by locking them inside before setting it ablaze, a Christian advocacy group has reported. However, the local police department is refusing to hold the violent perpetrators accountable.

The British Pakistani Christian Association reports that earlier this month, a mob of radicals in the city of Islamabad surrounded the home of 38-year-old Christian Boota Masih and began banging on the door, demanding he come outside.

When Masih answered the door, the mob's leader ordered him to take his family and abandon their home, including all of their belongings, or face severe consequences.

The mob claimed Masih and his family were trespassers in their own home; however, Masih told the advocacy group that he paid a million Pakistani rupees (about $9,500) in an oral agreement to purchase the house from a man named Ghulam Ali.

A letter has been allegedly circulating among members of the Saudi royal family, with warnings that the House of Saud may be losing its grip on power. The letter containing a number of political accusations is said to be penned by an unnamed royal himself.

"We [have] got closer and closer to the fall of the state and the loss of power," online news portal Middle East Eye cited the letter on Tuesday. Signed by "a descendant of the King Abdulaziz of the House of Saud," the letter is said to have been written by the late king's grandson, who confirmed to MEE he was the author, but asked not to be named "for fear of negative repercussions."

"We appeal to all the sons of King Abdulaziz... to summon an emergency meeting with all the family to discuss the situation and do everything that is need[ed] to save the country," the four-page document reportedly says, with a senior Saudi prince calling for the current "incapable" Saudi King Salman and his son Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to be replaced.

It has been a whirlwind week for American Muslims. They are trying to make sense of the dizzying rationales of politicians and media pundits as they struggle to determine the rightful status of Muslims in America.

When President Obama tweeted support for the 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed and invited him to the White House, it tipped off the conservatives. It clashed with their stance that paints the entire Muslim diaspora with a sweeping brush and puts them in the same league as the extremist fringe within the ranks of Islam.

This approach is anti-American and counterintuitive to the founding principles of this nation. Donald Trump (after the media backlash) has retracted his anti-Muslim sentiments. Sadly, Dr. Ben Carson is unwilling to change his hard-line and erroneous stance that a Muslim cannot be the president of the United States. This is not only a bigotry-laced statement, but rather an outright rejection of the Constitution that doesn't mandate a religious test for the post of the President.

According to Gatestone Institute the Pakistani government and military have warned the nation's tiny Christian minority that Islamic terrorist groups plan to target Christian religious institutions in the near future.

The plan of anti-Christian attacks allegedly includes Pakistan's Christian churches, schools, and hospitals.

Christian leader assert that there is already a government sponsored anti-Christian campaign in action by way of blasphemy laws and other discriminatory policies towards the religious minority.

The prevailing public attitude towards minorities, the Christian leadership believes, will only help Islamic State (ISIS) whose cells have already entered Pakistan and they are reported in action under other extremist outfits' names and banners against religious minorities.

Perspective: Can centralized Muslim Leadership be the Secret to Taking Down ISIS?

The Khalifa of Islam, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, says radicalized youth must learn the true Islam: Peace and dedication to humanity.

Recently, several accounts of Western Muslim youth leaving their homes to join ISIS have been making headlines. Many of these youth have been recruited via social media or by friends who have traveled to Syria to pledge allegiance to a life of war and destruction.

It is indeed an unfathomable thought to embrace yet alone act upon, and one questions why anyone would leave their freedom to be imprisoned to a life of cruelty. Many would argue that these youth do not have the guidance they need and that centralized Muslim leadership is the solution to end this crisis.
