The past two years have been 'catastrophic' for many Christians in the Middle East and parts of Africa, says a new report to be launched in Aberdeen, BBC has noted..
According to BBC Scotland's Rachel Massie, a report by the Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) charity describes what it calls "levels of persecution" in 22 countries and concludes that Christianity is on course for extinction in some areas within a generation.
The ACN report, available on the charity's website, says a massive exodus of Christians in parts of the Middle East, notably Syria combined with increasing pressures in Saudi Arabia and Iran "mean that the Church is being silenced and driven out of its ancient biblical heartland."
"The fear of genocide – in many cases well founded – has prompted an exodus of Christians, notably from the Middle East and parts of Africa," writes ACN in its Persecuted and Forgotten? 2013-2015 report.
"As a result of this exodus, Christianity is on course to disappear from Iraq within possibly five years – unless emergency help is provided on a massively increased scale at an international level," the report has warned.
