Canada: Muslim association strives to dispel myths surrounding religion

“The real Islam religion is only to serve mankind, we hold humanity first. We seriously condemn terrorism, especially terrorist attacks anywhere in the world. Terrorism is a cancer in the world.”

Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association brought their message of peace and global unity to Brantford on Saturday.

Hosting an information session in the Brantford Public Library, five members of the Muslim group aimed to dispel any misunderstandings of the teachings of Islam, the concept of Jihad and the Holy Qur’an in the wake of terrorist attacks around the world.

“We are here to educate the people, to give awareness and to introduce people to the true Islam and Qur’an,” Zaki-Ud-Din of Niagara said. “It has been projected that Islam is linked to terrorism but there is nothing connecting Islam to terrorism. We have only one message and that is love for all, hatred for none – this is our faith.”

The group handed out pamphlets outlining Islamic beliefs while distancing itself from any form of war or acts of terrorism.

“The real Islam religion is only to serve mankind, we hold humanity first,” Ud-Din said. “We seriously condemn terrorism, especially terrorist attacks anywhere in the world. Terrorism is a cancer in the world.”

Ud-Din said the real meaning of Jihad – an Arabic word that means struggle or ability to strive – is meant as an internal struggle to be nearer to God, to be a law abiding citizen and to fight one’s own evil inclinations and tendencies.

“The only solution is that we get together and work in one direction,” Ud-Din said of fighting against terrorism. “If we are not working collectively it will be very hard to change. We are also being persecuted.”

He said Muslim groups participating in acts of terrorism are “misguided people." They are going into terrorism wrongly in the name of Islam.

“The real Islam mosque is a sign and symbol of real peace across the world, we need moral support,” he said.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Group nation-wide campaign will hold 135 open houses and make 270 visits to over 35 towns in Canada.
